BONUS AT THE END OF THE POST
Introduction
Usually when people hear the word “tech“, the default view is that you have to know how to code. While that may be true, that’s very far from reality. You really don’t have to know how to code, to get into tech. In this article, I’ll share some resources on how to start depending on which path you choose.
All you need is internet and your smartphone or a computer. The rest is up to you. Remember that everyone learns differently, and what works for one person may not work for another. It’s important to find resources that work for you and to stick with it. How to start a career in tech in 6 simple ways:
Start by identifying the specific area of technology that interests you
This could be programming, network administration, information security, or something else. It’s important to have a clear idea of what you want to do in the tech industry. Research different roles and technologies to determine what interests you the most.
Take me for example, I’ve always wanted to be in tech. Like most people, I thought I had to know how to code. So in my research stage, I started to learn programming languages.
I quickly realised that’s not my thing – I’m mostly into web design and digital marketing now. None of these require me to know how to code. Web design is different from web development (requires coding skills in languages like Javascript, PHP, Python or any backend language). I’m also into UI/UX design, which also doesn’t require any coding experience.
Learn the skills required for your chosen area of technology
You can do this through online tutorials, coding bootcamps, or a degree program in a related field. Just note that you don’t need a degree in anything to become good at it.
I have no degree in any of the tech skills I have. That’s how easy it is to get into tech. Once you know what you want to do, you’ll need to learn the skills required for that role. For example, if you want to be a programmer, you’ll need to learn a programming language such as Python, Java, or C++. Online tutorials, coding bootcamps, and degree programs are all great ways to learn the skills you need.
If you want to become a Digital Marketer, there are many blogs and websites dedicated to digital marketing, such as Moz, Hubspot, and Neil Patel. These can be a great resource for staying up-to-date on industry news and trends.
Get some hands-on experience – The best way to learn digital marketing is by doing it. Start experimenting with digital marketing tactics on your own, or try to get a part-time or freelance job to gain some hands-on experience.
There are many practical tools like Hootsuite, Ahrefs, SEMrush, and Google Analytics that can be used to monitor and improve your digital marketing efforts.
Build a portfolio of projects to showcase your skills
This can include personal projects, open-source contributions, or even class assignments. A portfolio of projects is a great way to showcase your skills to potential employers. It’s a way to demonstrate your ability to solve problems, your attention to detail and your ability to work with a team. Refer to my portfolio page as an example: My Portfolio
Network with other professionals in the field
This can be done through online forums, meetups, or professional associations. Networking is an important part of building a career in technology. You can connect with other professionals through online forums, meetups, or professional associations. This can help you learn about job opportunities, get advice, and make connections that can help you advance in your career.
LinkedIn is a great place to start. Follow companies and people in the tech industries you want to specialise in. Other great resources are Reddit (Almost any topic/industry) and Stackoverflow (For programmers).
Look for entry-level opportunities or internships in the field to gain experience
Gaining experience is essential for success in the tech industry. Entry-level job opportunities or internships are a great way to get your foot in the door and start building a professional network.
Most startup companies have internship programs you can apply for. This also gives you very hands-on experience since you’ll be working with a company that already has a product out there. The best way to improve is to practice.
Never stop learning and updating your skills
The technology industry is constantly changing, and staying current is essential for success. This applies for any industry or path you take. It’s important to continuously learn new technologies, programming languages and tools, and to stay updated on industry trends. This will help you to stay competitive in the job market and advance in your career.
