Becoming a content creator can be one of the best careers moves you can make. It offers you the freedom to work from home and travel, lets you choose your own hours and schedule, and allows you to control your earnings. But how do you become a content creator? Where should you start?
Specify your niche
Getting your niche is the first step to becoming a content creator. It’s essential to define your goals and content so that you can create high-quality, relevant content for your audience.
Once you’ve defined what niche you want to target, think about how this fits into the bigger picture of where your brand is going. Is it an extension of another part of your business? Or will it be its own thing? If so, why would someone want to follow along with your story on social media?
Develop an audience
Developing an audience is the most essential step in becoming a content creator. You can have the best ideas in the world, but they’re useless if no one sees them.
The first thing to do is create your own blog or use social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter to share your content with others. If you’re new at this, it might feel intimidating initially, but don’t worry! Many resources will help guide you through all stages of starting up: creating a website or blog (or both), choosing the right platform and getting started with social media marketing campaigns.
Once you’ve got those basics down pat (and if possible — before even starting), start thinking about how often/regularly would be ideal for publishing new posts/content on my site/blog? Do I want it weekly? Monthly? Seasonally (e.g., summertime only)? Asking these questions now will help guide future decisions when deciding what kind of frequency works best given my goals & audience size, etcetera…
Get a platform
Now that you know what kind of content creator you want to be, it’s time to find a platform. Here are some ways to go about it:
- You can choose a platform that suits your niche and make sure it has the potential to earn money (e.g., YouTube or Instagram).
- Look for platforms where an audience is already interested in what you do (e.g., Twitch or Musical.ly). Engaging with those who already follow similar accounts will help ensure tremendous success when growing your following.
- Choose something with which you feel comfortable! If there isn’t anything out there yet, then create one yourself!
Create content that resonates with your audience
As a content creator, knowing your audience and creating content that resonates with them is essential.
The best way to do this is by creating a survey and asking people what they want from you. You can run a study on social media or send emails asking what posts they would like to see more often. Once you have your results, put together a plan based on what their responses were saying.
For example, if most people said they wanted more educational posts in their inboxes, we’ll do that!
Learn how to engage with your audience
- Use social media to build a community. It’s the best way to get your voice out there and connect with others who share your interests.
- Engage with your audience. Respond to comments and questions, even if it’s just “hi!” or “thanks.” Be responsive! Be consistent in your content creation schedule so people know when they can expect new stuff from you! And feel free to engage in conversations outside of the comments section — you can also use Twitter, Facebook Messenger (or any other messaging app), email newsletters and even Instagram direct messages if need be.
Becoming a content creator is easy if you know what you’re doing and keep at it!
Content creation is a lot of work, but if you need more preparation, this may not be your career path. Building up your audience and getting noticed by brands looking for talent like yours takes time.
You have to be consistent with creating new content regularly (at least once a week), or else people will forget about what they saw last time and stop checking back in with your channel as often as they could be doing otherwise.
The more often someone sees something from their favourite creator’s feed, the more likely they will enjoy watching everything else that person posts too!
And finally – feel like only some videos need perfect lighting or editing software; just do whatever makes sense given how much time/money/energy each project demands from its creator(s).
As a content creator, you are the face and voice of your brand. This means you must have a strong personality, some charisma and, most importantly, be yourself! You are the one who is going to bring it to life for your customers.
